As More Riders Return to Maryland Roads, Serious Motorcycle Crashes Continue in St. Mary’s County

On May 9, 2026, Maryland State Police responded to a serious motorcycle crash in St. Mary’s County involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcyclist near a heavily traveled local roadway. Emergency crews remained on scene for several hours while traffic was diverted around the crash site.

Motorcycle accidents continue increasing across Maryland during Spring and Summer months as warmer weather brings more riders back onto the roads. Unfortunately during this time, many collisions can occur when surrounding drivers fail to properly check blind spots, judge distance, or recognize motorcycles approaching intersections.

For riders, injuries are often far more severe than those in a motor vehicle accident. Head trauma, road rash, fractures, spinal injuries, and long-term rehabilitation are common following serious motorcycle crashes.

One issue that frequently arises after motorcycle accidents is the assumption that the rider was somehow reckless simply because a motorcycle was involved. However, many investigations later reveal that another driver failed to yield, changed lanes improperly, or simply did not see the rider in time.

Roadways throughout St. Mary’s County, Charles County, and Prince George’s County continue experiencing increased traffic volume, particularly during commuting hours and weekends. As more vehicles occupy Southern Maryland roads, riders remain especially vulnerable.
