Waldorf is an unincorporated community in Charles County, Maryland. It was settled prior to 1900 as a rural crossroads with a train station and was originally referred to as “Beantown”, after a local family. In 1880, the General Assembly of Maryland changed the name to “Waldorf” in honor of William Waldorf Astor.

Once known for its tobacco market, Waldorf rose to prominence in the 50’s as a gambling destination after slot machines were legalized in Charles County. Waldorf remained a gambling destination until 1968, when gambling was outlawed again. A loan package from the Dept of Housing and Urban Development in 1970 sparked its growth as a residential community, which it has since remained. Tobacco farming nearly disappeared in the 1990s, when most farmers accepted buy-outs from the Maryland state government.

Waldorf is mostly flat, with some small hills to the west, and wetlands to the south and east. It’s moderately forested, with primarily pine and oak trees. It is known to have very diverse wildlife on land and in ponds and streams. Though the urban section has developed significantly, the community remains surrounded by farms. Some well known farms in the area are Middleton Manor Farms, Middleton’s Cedar Hill farm, and Shlagel Farms, which is popular for its strawberries, vegetables, flowers, and angus beef.

Waldorf’s population was roughly 67,750 as of the 2010 census. Due to its proximity to Washington, D.C., Waldorf is predominantly a bedroom community for those who work in the surrounding metro areas. Employment opportunities within Waldorf limits are mainly service and sales jobs. The median income for a household in Waldorf, MD as of the 2007 census was $86,901 for a household and $94.432 for a family. As of 2017, Waldorf was ranked #18 out of the 50 Best Cities to Live In, according to USA Today.
